On Dec. 2, the New Orleans Saints came marching in as the SSA student body greeted two Saints players with rounds of cheers and applause at a special black-and-gold pep rally.
In preparation for the event, the Student Council decorated the gym with signs declaring "Geaux Saints," "Who Dat" and the team's signature fleur-de-lis. Though their identities remained a secret before the pep rally, the mystery guests were finally revealed.
Student Council President Mackenzie Schott welcomed players Jon Stinchcomb and Zach Strief, both tackles. After a brief introduction, the audience was entertained by the SSA and SPS cheerleaders, along with the SSA Royalettes and SPS Golden Blues dance teams. Dressed in black-and-gold jerseys, the teams performed routines to New Orleans-style music.
The spotlight soon returned to guests Stinchcomb and Strief. As they spoke, they encouraged students to "dream big" by aspiring to achieve goals. Stinchcomb stressed the importance of a strong character and good choices. He stated, "Don't be your own obstacle," explaining that the choices a person makes today will impact her goals for tomorrow.
Strief discussed developing a positive attitude toward parents, teachers and peers. He pointed out that a good attitude toward others is a decision that will ultimately lead one in the right direction.
Following the motivational speeches, students had the opportunity to ask the players questions. Stinchcomb and Strief also said they enjoy playing Football in the New Orleans Superdome, and they concluded by wishing students good luck in the future. Two autographed hats were won by sophomore Sara Kuebel and junior Becky Songy. At the close of the assembly, Principal Mary Kathryn Villere thanked the special guests and everyone in attendance for participating in this special occasion.
The Christmas dance was held on Dec. 5 in the SSA gym. Along with Christmas-themed costumes, students also dressed as valentines, Indians and Easter bunnies to keep in line with the theme, "You've Been Punked."
Canned goods were collected at the door to benefit the St. Vincent de Paul Society/Covington Food Bank.
