St. Scholastica Academy 2009-03-29
On the starry evening of March 21, St. Scholastica Academy celebrated the 25th anniversary of its annual Falaya Fling.

The Falaya Fling serves as the main fundraiser for the school, gathering together the SSA community of administration, faculty, staff, parents and alumnae.

The event included both silent and live auctions, a gourmet buffet, and live band music and dancing held at the Castine Center in Pelican Park.

Throughout the evening, guests had the opportunity to bid on a wide variety of items during the silent auction portion of the evening. The crowd enjoyed mingling with friends and enjoying fine cuisine and libations provided by more than 50 local restaurants.

Music by Four Unplugged provided lively entertainment and dancing. Special guest Kevin Houser of the New Orleans Saints presided as auctioneer for the spirited live auction.

Items up for bid included a Hornets basketball signed by "CP3" (Chris Paul); an autographed New Orleans Saints team jersey; a trip to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico; dinner for eight prepared at the winner's home by New Orleans chef John Besh; dinner with the SSA administration; and an adorable, purebred golden retriever puppy.

Once again, the student art section of the silent auction proved to be a favorite attraction. Under the guidance of art teachers Julie Raines, Anne Arbo, Marcelle McGoey Delaune ('97), and Eleanore Krentel ('98), as well as Falaya Fling student art chairs Dorothy Phelan and volunteer Renee Lacassagne, current art students created an array of individual artwork. These pieces included hand-dyed scarves and ties, mosaic birdhouses, stepping stones, small and large paintings, hand-made jewelry, and stationery.

The proceeds from Falaya Fling 2009 will benefit SSA's financial assistance program and enhancements for the AP curriculum; a percentage will go to the endowment for future needs. This year, SSA has designated the St. Tammany Memorial Cancer Fund as a recipient of a charitable donation. Falaya Fling co-chairs were Leslie Ellinghausen, mother of junior Victoria Ellinghausen; Licy Gagnet, mother of junior Ellen Gagnet; Ann Rosenow, mother of juniors Ellen and Karen Rosenow; Laure Rooney, mother of eighth-grader Emily Rooney and freshman Meghan Rooney; and Rhonda Sceroler, mother of eighth-grader Sidney Sceroler.

Corporate sponsors and patrons were acknowledged with designations such as Gold, Silver, White, Blue and Black.

SSA students from all grade levels participated in the Falaya Fling by donating their time in a variety of ways. Sporting black pants, white oxford shirts and ties, the students assisted as patron party hostesses, greeters, main food servers and table servers. Junior Ellen Gagnet offered her thoughts: "Volunteering for my school fundraiser was a fun and rewarding way to fulfill my service requirement and help out."

President Marguerite Celestin and Principal Mary Kathryn Villere offered special thanks and recognition to all the volunteers who have given so generously to this worthy fundraiser over the past 25 years and to the many local restaurants and merchants who have generously supported and joined in SSA's celebration of community.
