New Orleans Saints Strategy and Personnel 2009-04-09
The Saints continued to work on upgrading their defense with the signing of nine-year veteran defensive tackle Rod Coleman, who previously played for the Oakland Raiders and Atlanta Falcons.

Coleman, 32, signed a one-year deal with the Saints to help bolster the interior of their defensive line. Coleman, who was out of football in 2008, had two of his best seasons in 2004 and '05 with the Falcons while playing for Bill Johnson, who is the Saints' new defensive line coach.

Coleman, who has 581/2 career sacks, led all NFL defensive tackles in that department in 2004 (111/2) and '05 (101/2). He also forced four fumbles in 2005 and was rewarded with a trip to the Pro Bowl after that season.

Coleman has played in 109 regular-season games with 70 starts. With the Saints, he figures to work in a rotation that already includes starters Sedrick Ellis and Kendrick Clancy and backups Hollis Thomas and Brian Young, although Thomas or Young could become a salary cap casualty.

With the signing of veteran safeties Darren Sharper and Pierson Prioleau, the Saints have added a probable starter and more depth to the back end of their secondary.

Because they were hit with so many long passes the last two years, 67 of 25 yards or longer, the Saints desperately needed to upgrade that position with some playmakers -- or at least some players who can cover the deep ball.

They've appeared to have successfully done that, on paper anyway, which means they can turn their attention to other positions in the upcoming draft.

1. Running back: With Deuce McAllister gone, the Saints need another bruiser in the backfield to complement Reggie Bush and Pierre Thomas, who is more of a third-down back than an every-down pounder.

2. Cornerback: Tracy Porter earned a starting job as a rookie last summer and Randall Gay was solid as the nickel, but Mike McKenzie was cut after finishing the last two seasons on injured reserve with knee injuries. They signed Jabari Greer in free agency, but it wouldn't hurt to get another guy there.

3. Linebacker: The Saints are set in the middle after re-signing Jonathan Vilma, but they may look at this position for the future because strong-side 'backer Scott Fujita is going into the final year of his contract and weak-side linebacker Scott Shanle has two years left on his deal.

MEDICAL WATCH: No updates.

--TE Mark Campbell finished the season on injured reserve after having surgery on his knee, but could be re-signed because he's a valuable blocker.

--CB Aaron Glenn, a 15-year veteran, was bothered by an ankle problem all year and likely won't be re-signed.

--K Martin Gramatica isn't likely to be re-signed after rookie Garrett Hartley made all 13 of his field-goal attempts in the second half of the season.

--FS Terrence Holt was a late-season injury replacement and it's not known if the Saints want him back.

--DT Antwan Lake has been a solid backup in the middle, but likely won't be re-signed.

--CB Michael Lehan was a late-season injury replacement and could be re-signed.

--C/G Matt Lehr was a backup who was released several times when the Saints needed a roster spot, so he may or may not return.

--DT James Reed was signed during training camp, but tore his Achilles' tendon and won't be re-signed.

--RB Aaron Stecker has struggled with various leg problems the last couple of years and probably won't return.

--NT Montavious Stanley (not tendered as ERFA).

--RG Jahri Evans (tendered at $2.792M with first- and third-round picks as compensation) has been a key run and pass blocker since he broke into the starting lineup as a rookie in 2006 and will be tendered.

--WR Lance Moore (tendered at $1.545M with second-round pick as compensation) is a former street free agent who led the team in receptions (79), receiving yards (928) and TD catches (10).

--T Zach Strief (tendered at $1.545M with second-round pick as compensation) served as a capable backup and filled in admirably as a starter in a pinch.

--CB Leigh Torrence (tendered at $1.01M with no compensation) was claimed off waivers as an injury replacement.
