New Orleans Saints Notes, Quotes 2008-10-30
--Saints left guard Jamar Nesbit filed suit Tuesday against the maker of a weight-loss supplement, alleging the pills he took were improperly spiked with a diuretic that is banned by the NFL.

Attorney Brian Molloy filed the suit against the makers of StarCaps, an over-the-counter product, on behalf of Nesbit in a federal district court in New Jersey.

The action came after Nesbit returned last weekend from a four-game NFL suspension. The 10-year veteran was sidelined for four games without pay after he tested positive for Bumetanide, a substance that helps rid the body of excess water and salt. The NFL considers the substance a possible masking agent for steroids.

Nesbit didn't appealed his suspension because he did not expect to win, and instead chose get it over with as soon as possible while trying to recoup his $235,294 in lost salary from StarCaps, Molloy said.

Nesbit claims Bumetanide wasn't listed as an ingredient on the bottle's label although some of his leftover pills were tested and found to be contaminated with Bumetanide. He's suing for the alleged intentional, undisclosed spiking of the product with the banned diuretic.

--With a bye this week, the Saints returned to practice on Wednesday.

The Saints worked for the first time since returning from London on Monday night and practiced again Thursday before getting a three-day respite from coach Sean Payton from Friday through Sunday.

The player will return Monday for what Payton calls a "bonus practice" before their normal day off on Tuesday. After that, they'll return to their regular weekly schedule as they prepare for their next game on Nov. 9 at Atlanta.

--Saints quarterback Drew Brees was named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week on Wednesday for his efforts in leading his team to a 37-32 victory over the San Diego Chargers.

Brees completed 30 of 41 passes, hitting on 73.2 percent of his throws, for 339 yards with three TDs and no interceptions against the Chargers. He was not sacked and had a passer rating of 121.9.

It's the second NFC player of the week award for Brees in the last three games. He now has six player-of-the-week awards since joining the Saints in 2006, moving him past former linebacker Rickey Jackson (five) for the most in franchise history.

--Three members of the Saints' famed "Dome Patrol" are among 133 players and coaches to be considered for the Pro Football Hall of Fame's Class of 2009.

Linebackers Rickey Jackson, Sam Mills and Pat Swilling were the heart and soul of a defense that ranked among the NFL's best units in total yards allowed and points allowed from the mid-1980s to early 1990s.

Four other Hall of Fame nominees for 2009 -- wide receiver Wes Chandler, cornerback Eric Allen, center Jay Hilgenberg and quarterback Ken Stabler -- also have Saints ties.

BY THE NUMBERS: 6 -- 300-yard passing games so far this season by Saints quarterback Drew Brees, which leads the NFL.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Right now, what you want to have happen is make sure all the correct facts are out. I think, as the weeks go by, that we'll wait and see what happens." -- Saints coach Sean Payton, on possible four-game suspensions to Deuce McAllister, Will Smith and Charles Grant.
