New Orleans Saints Notes, Quotes 2009-05-08
--The Saints will hold a rookie minicamp this weekend for their four draft picks, 13 undrafted free agents and assorted younger players on the roster. The team also usually invites free agents to participate on a tryout basis.

The minicamp is scheduled to get underway Friday and will wind up on Sunday at the team's training facility in Metairie.

Among the players the Saints will see on the field for the first time are cornerback Malcolm Jenkins, the 14th overall pick in the draft last month, and free-agent running back Herb Donaldson of Western Illinois. Donaldson received a three-year contract from the Saints.

A 5-foot-11, 220-pounder, Donaldson ended his career at Western Illinois as its all-time leading rusher with 4,746 yards and 50 touchdowns. The Saints, who are in need of a short-yardage back, outbid several teams -- including Dallas, St. Louis, Cleveland, Kansas City and New York Giants -- to get him.

--According to NFL.com, the Saints are considering trying to add former Indianapolis Colts and Arizona Cardinals running back Edgerrin James to their backfield.

Steve Wyche reported Wednesday that Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said the team has held internal discussions about pursuing James, who has rushed for 12,121 yards in his 10-year career. James was released by the Cardinals last week.

"There's been talk about Edgerrin James, and we've spent some time evaluating that prospect," Loomis said. "We'll continue to do that. We haven't made any decision or closed any doors on acquiring another running back if we feel that's something we need to do. We do feel a lot better about what we have in-house than people do outside of our building."

Loomis added that the Saints, who have Reggie Bush and Pierre Thomas as their top returning backs after releasing Deuce McAllister this winter, will re-visit the situation after their rookie minicamp this weekend.

--Saints wide receiver Biren Ealy and tight end Kolo Kapanui, who were long shots to make the roster, were waived last week after being involved in an embarrassing incident not far from the team's training facility.

Ealy, who was signed in January, and Kapanui, who spent part of last season on the Saints' practice squad, were released two days after being arrested by Jefferson Parish deputies on counts of lewd conduct, obscenity and disturbing the peace after a night out.

They were picked up in the early-morning hours of May 3 when two women saw them urinating in the parking lot of the apartment complex that the two players lived in. Ealy and Kapanui were released on bond that night.

The players' lawyer, Donald "Chick" Foret, said they did nothing obscene and thought they were in a secluded area late at night when only one of them -- Ealy -- relieved himself behind a garage.

"... He was urinating in what he thought was a secluded area and a young lady walked up on him, and he overreacted verbally," Foret said. "But never, ever, ever, did either of these young men threaten, intimidate or expose themselves to anyone."

--Former Saints cornerback Mike McKenzie, who was released this winter while he rehabbed from a fractured kneecap, has been cleared to return to the field, agent Drew Rosenhaus announced Thursday.

Rosenhaus made the announcement on his Twitter page, where he also said that the Saints had expressed some interest in re-signing McKenzie. Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis indicated that they "left the door ajar" when the 33-year-old McKenzie, who finished both the 2007 and '08 seasons on injured reserve with knee injuries.

But, barring an injury this spring or in training camp, that seems pretty unlikely since the Saints decided to go with a younger group of players at the position. Tracy Porter, Jabari Greer, Randall Gay, Jason David, Leigh Torrence and rookie Malcolm Jenkins are on the current roster.

--The New Orleans Times-Picayune reported the Saints were $4,495,636 under the salary cap as of May 5.

That was the latest figure available after the Saints terminated the contracts of veteran defensive tackles Brian Young and Hollis Thomas, who were released following the draft.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "We're optimistic. The game is one thing, but far more people come to the Super Bowl for the experience. No place can offer the Super Bowl atmosphere and experience like New Orleans." -- Saints vice president of marketing Ben Hales, on the city's chances of landing Super Bowl XLVII.
