New Orleans Saints Notes, Quotes 2009-04-10
--As of April 8, the Saints owned just four selections for the April 25-26 draft with only one pick in the top 115 -- which could tempt them to trade down if the player they target isn't available at the 14th overall spot.

The Saints dealt four of their seven picks away last spring and summer although they got one back in the trade that brought middle linebacker Jonathan Vilma to New Orleans from the New York Jets.

Because Vilma participated in a certain amount of defensive snaps, the Jets received the Saints' third-round pick (No. 76 overall) this year. But the Jets gave back the fourth-rounder they got from the Saints last spring when the deal was made, which means Vilma cost the Saints a third-rounder.

In addition to the 14th pick in the first round, the Saints have two fourth-round selections (Nos. 116 and 118) and a seventh (No. 222). Their second- and fifth-round picks (Nos. 45 and 151, respectively) went to the New York Giants for Jeremy Shockey and their sixth-rounder (No. 187) went to Green Bay for the Packers' seventh-round pick last spring, which they used on wide receiver Adrian Arrington.

--Saints quarterback Drew Brees is one of 16 NFL players who will be honored at the NFL Players Gala in Washington, D.C., on April 16.

Brees will be honored for his off-field work with a "JB Award." James Brown of CBS Sports, in conjunction with the NFL Players Association, annually recognizes players for their contributions to the community they live and play in.

Brown picked 12 players to receive a JB Award after each NFL team nominated a player. Four special JB Awards will also be handed out and one player will receive the Byron "Whizzer" White Award, which is given to the player who serves his team, community and country in the spirit of the late NFL player and Supreme Court Justice.

Brees and his wife, Brittany, have been very active in the New Orleans community through their Brees Dream Foundation since joining the Saints in 2006, helping New Orleans rebound from Hurricane Katrina in a variety of ways.

--Cars were removed from a Jackson, Miss., Nissan dealership owned by former Saints running back Deuce McAllister last week -- one month after he filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

According to The Associated Press, about 20 cars and trucks were taken off the lot during an interview in which McAllister said he was seeking investors to help bring the dealership out of bankruptcy.

McAllister, who was released by the Saints on Feb. 17, filed Chapter 11 papers in March after Nissan Motor Acceptance Corp. filed suit against him because he owed the company nearly $7 million -- mostly in unsold vehicles sitting on his lot.

"Nissan financing has every right to protect the vehicles," said McAllister, who hopes to resume his career with another team this summer. "What they choose to do with them is their business. There's obviously a lot more to the story, but we'll see how this shakes out."

--Saints coach Sean Payton and his wife, Beth, this winter awarded $350,000 to three non-profit organizations from the Payton's Play It Forward Foundation they created last year.

The money, raised at the first Black & Gold Gala hosted by the Paytons in the Superdome last October, was distributed to organizations dedicated to improving the quality of life in New Orleans and the region -- including Brad Pitt's Make it Right NOLA foundation.

The inaugural Black & Gold Gala, which was co-chaired by singers Jimmy Buffett and Irma Thomas, was oversold with more than 1,200 people attending the event.

"Beth and I have proudly called New Orleans home for nearly three years," Payton said in a statement. "Since the moment we got here, this is something we've wanted to do, and we are both so grateful that the first year for the foundation has been such a tremendous success."

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I'm excited to bring leadership to this team, and I'm excited to bring playmaking ability. ... That's what I've always done." -- Saints FS Darren Sharper, on what he brings to his new team.
