New Orleans Saints Notes, Quotes 2009-03-14
--As of March 10, the Saints had the third-fewest dollars to spend under the $127 million salary cap of the 32 NFL teams.

Citing league sources, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reported that the Saints were about $2.2 million under the cap after re-signing three of their own unrestricted free agents and one free agent from outside the organization.

The Saints had 62 players under contract, but the $2.2 million figure didn't include fullback Heath Evans. He agreed to a two-year deal last week.

The only teams that had less money to spend than the Saints were Carolina ($24,042) and Baltimore ($1,940,557). Tampa Bay had the most cap space at more than $39.8 million.

--The Times-Picayune reported the breakdown on the four-year contracts signed by unrestricted free agents Devery Henderson and Jabari Greer, a cornerback whom they signed away from the Buffalo Bills.

Henderson re-signed with the Saints for a total of $12 million with $6 million guaranteed. The contract calls for base salaries of $1.5 million in 2009 (guaranteed), $1.8 million in 2010 (with $1 million guaranteed), $2.25 million in 2011 and $2.65 million in 2012. He also received a $3.5 million signing bonus.

Greer was given a $22 million contract with $10 million guaranteed. His base salaries are $3 million in 2009 (guaranteed), $3.6 million (guaranteed) in 2010, $4.5 million (with $400,000 guaranteed) in 2011 and $5.4 million in 2012. He received a $3 million signing bonus.

Also, Saints right tackle Jon Stinchcomb's five-year contract calls for base salaries of $1.5 million (2009), $1.8 million (2010), $2.25 million (2011), $2.7 million (2012) and $3.15 million (2013). His guaranteed money and signing bonus were unknown.

--Stinchcomb and agent Pat Dye Jr. needed less than 24 hours after free agency started to come to terms on his new five-year deal with the Saints.

But how the deal was completed is a story Stinchcomb in itself and one he can tell his children some day. The seven-year veteran was vacationing in DisneyWorld when the new deal was completed -- which, to say the least, was an interesting experience.

"There were a number of discussions that went on," Stinchcomb said with a laugh. "I'd be on a ride and then I would have to get off and text my agent or call. I'm sure the other patrons in line were wondering what we were talking about."

--The Saints got visits this week from Detroit Lions defensive tackle Shaun Cody and Cleveland Browns tight end Darnell Dinkins.

Cody, a second-round pick out of USC in 2005, has spent most of his four-year career in Detroit. The 6-foot-4, 310-pounder recorded a career-high 36 tackles while playing in all 16 games in 2008.

The Saints have some depth at defensive tackle in starters Sedrick Ellis and Kendrick Clancy as well as backups with Brian Young and Hollis Thomas and second-year pro DeMario Pressley. But Young and Thomas could be potential salary-cap casualties.

Dinkins is regarded more or a blocker that a receiver. He has just 25 catches for 228 yards and three TDs in a six-year career with the New York Giants, Baltimore and Cleveland.

--Sean Payton's Play It Forward Foundation will host a new event called "Viking Fest" this weekend in New Orleans.

Payton will host a "Football 101 Clinic" for novice football fans during the festival, which runs from morning until night. He'll also participate in a fun run that will coincide with a 5K run, and he'll present awards to the winners of the various age groups.

The event also will include football-related activities for children, raffle items, a fireworks display and musical performances by some of New Orleans most popular bands.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "They wanted me back, and it was important to them to have me back. I think I can do a whole lot more than I've shown. I want to show everyone around here that I can do it." -- WR Devery Henderson on getting a new four-year contract from the Saints.
