In his first on-field practice as the Saints' defensive coordinator, Gregg Williams set the tone with a message that rang loud and clear: his defense will attack.

Even though he had only 28 rookies and assorted young players to work with during the team's first minicamp last week, Williams made certain that everyone understood what is to come -- especially in upcoming organized team activities and a full-squad minicamp in early June.

If the three-day, five-practice minicamp was any indication, and there's no reason to think that it won't, the Saints will be aggressive from the first snap of their first game.

"I loved it," said safety Chip Vaughn, one of the team's two fourth-round draft picks. "That's the way I like to play, just pin your ears back and go. I have no problems with that at all."

It didn't take long for Williams to give his team its marching orders before the first practice. After they warmed up, he brought them all together in the end zone at the Saints training facility and told them what he wanted.

"He told us to dominate," said cornerback Malcolm Jenkins, the Saints' top draft pick. "He wanted us to set the tempo at practice. I think we did a pretty good job of it today.

"He set the tone in the first meeting with us, he said as a defense we're going to set the tone," Jenkins said. "We're not going to react to what the offense does, we're going to dictate the practice."

That was just the start, Vaughn said.

"He doesn't want us to let up at all on the offense," he said. "As soon as we got that choke hold, he wants us to squeeze the life out of 'em."
